Ledger Drawings: In the late 19th and 20th centuries, "ledger art" became a traditional form of historical documentation for the Plains Indians. As traders, settlers, and the military pushed onto Tribal Lands, the Indians acquired ruled paper from ledger accounting books. On this paper they began preserving their own oral history which they had once captured on buffalo hides.
